I am always so honored when families invite me to be apart of their birth team. I felt especially honored to attend Isabella’s birth. You see, her mother wanted her birth team to look like her. There are not many midwives and doulas who identify as WOC. Especially in places like the Midwest. She pulled together a wonderful team to support her!

Did you know that Black Women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White Women?! The statistics in regards to birth & BWOC are dismal at best. Pregnancy-related deaths are much higher for Black Women and a significant portion of these deaths are thought to be preventable. That’s the heartbreaking truth. It shows that Black Women are not monitored as closely & their concerns/symptoms more often dismissed. It’s unacceptable. While I may not be the best person to speak on this topic - it is something I am continuing to learn/speak about. I will continue to do the work to be an effective ally as well as whatever I can to make sure BWOC feel represented.
